What Influences Early Links’ OT Practice?

Early Links continues to provide innovative, evidence-based therapy programs to individuals who may otherwise 'fall through the gaps'. Our therapists embrace neurodevelopmental and relational frameworks to provide a safe and nurturing environment for therapeutic work to occur with individuals and their families/caregivers.

We aim to create culturally safe, disability- and neurodiversity-affirming programs that support individuals to celebrate their goal achievements and explore all potential opportunities in their lives. Our Team highly values the clinical reasoning process and frequently reviews plans to question “is this the right intervention, for the right reasons, at the right time, for THIS person”

The following information is a glimpse of the training our Team undertakes with the support of their supervisor and peers.

We hope that you find something insightful from these resources and if they align with your values, please reach out so we can connect and speak about joining our Early Links Team.

Clinical approaches

A strong foundation in clinical reasoning is what makes occupational therapists successful in delivering adaptive and individualised programs to support goal achievement. Reflective clinical reasoning enables us to 'zoom out' and consider the person, their context, and their individual goals to recommend the right intervention at the right time.

In sessions, therapists use clinical reasoning in-the-moment to assess interventions and adapt, as needed, to the client's capacity and preferences. The Early Links team draws on a number of evidence-based clinical interventions, theoretical frameworks and frames of reference that shape our practice and guide our clinical thinking. Our influences continue to evolve in response to shifts in knowledge and the availability of quality research, however currently include:

  • Ayres' Sensory Integration - Dr. Jean Ayres (video) (article)

  • DIR Floortime - Dr. Stanley Greenspan (website)

  • Occupational Performance Coaching - Dr. Fiona Graham (website)

  • Polyvagal theory - Dr. Stephen Porges (article) (video)

  • Affective neuroscience - Jaak Panksepp (video)

  • Interpersonal neurobiology - Dan Siegel & others (video)

We also recognise the importance and value of considering Lived Experience as a key component of our evidence base that informs service delivery
